Tsunami In Japan And Hawaii

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the 8.9-magnitude earthquake was the strongest in the country's history. Television footage showed towering waves surging toward the northeastern shoreline, pulling cars into the water and knocking boats and buildings onto their sides.


Initial forecasts warned of potential devastation throughout the Pacific Rim, including Hawaii, and reaching east around the globe to the continental United States. But the waves that reached Hawaii about 8 a.m. Washington time were relatively modest, and officials said the tsunami would have minimal impact on the West Coast.

The Tsunami later hit the shores of Hawaii. Tsunami waves swamped Hawaii beaches and severely damaged harbors in California after devastating Japan and sparking evacuations throughout the Pacific. 


Water rushed up on roadways and into hotel lobbies on the Big Island and low-lying areas in Maui were flooded as 7-foot waves crashed ashore. Large waves also hit the U.S. western coast, shaking loose boats that weren't moved in time and tearing apart wooden docks in at least two California harbors.


The waves didn't make it over a 20-foot break wall protecting the rest of the city, and no serious injuries or home damage was immediately reported. Scientists warned that the first tsunami waves are not always the strongest, and officials said people in Hawaii and along the West Coast should remain vigilant. Still, the tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory in Hawaii, and Gov. Neil Abercrombie said the islands were "fortunate almost beyond words."

The Tsunami warning issued after a powerful earthquake in Japan has been widened to include the rest of Pacific coast, including Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand, and the entire coast of Central and South America.

The United States also widened its tsunami warning to the rest of Pacific.

Meanwhile, a Tsunami watch has been issued for the Oregon coast and reports said that waves could hit before 7:30 am PT. 

Most elevators came to a halt, and some radioactive plants shut down automatically. However, none of the radioactive materials have leaked to the outside. 15 miles under the sea, 18 miles east off the coast of Japan, and scientists are calling it a "super-quake", its also a major test for the tsunami warnings, people need to be prepared. There is another Tsunami due in Taiwan, the Prime Minister is telling people to evacuate to higher grounds, with 7 aftershocks already being reported. From Mexico to Alaska people are being told to get to high ground.

JAPAN 8.9 EARTHQUAKE

A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off Japan's northeastern coast, triggering a four meter tsunami that washed away cars along parts of the coastline.

Video from national broadcaster NHK showed dozens of cars, large ferries and some buildings being swept out to sea in the port city of Kamaishi in the province of Iwate.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warming for the entire Pacific coast of Japan following the quake that struck about 125 kilometers off the eastern coast, at a depth of 10 kilometers.  Residents in the coastal areas have been urged to immediately evacuate to higher ground.  

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in the U.S. state of Hawaii said a tsunami warning was also in effect for Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas.  It said a tsunami watch was issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii.
